    I am trying to identify a coat-of-arms (wax seal) on a 17th-century Dutch painting. I have narrowed the search down to the United Provinces (Den Haag, Rotterdam, maybe Amsterdam…).
    The figure is a stork (long beak) with an eel/serpent/fish in its mouth. One of the legs seems to be raised.
    At the top, in a band, are three stars (six points).
    Can anyone help?

    Wapen: in blauw een dwarsbalk, boven vergezeld van drie sterren naast elkaar, alles goud en beneden van een zilveren reiger, staande op rijzende groene grond, in zijn snavel een gouden worm houdend.

    Thank you for this information. I have also found a reference to “Des Maretz” at the website of the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie. Is this the positive identification and is there any way to get an illustration of the coat-of-arms?

    No problem.. in fact, it only took a minute.
    You have to ask the CBG for a copy. as i understand you can order online.

    Thank your for this extra information and pictures (i was not able to acess them at the CBG link you gave me).

    Now I know what a “dwarsbalk” is. There is no thick stripe on the wax seal illustrated in B+W. But this is the closest I have come to image on the seal.

    The bird in the color illustration seems to be a crane with a horseshoe in its beak, not a snake or fish.

    Maybe I have misread the seal.

    I still have one question. I am a layman (art historian) as far as heraldry is concerned.
    I have found in Rietstap a similar coat-of-arms under “des Marets” (in this description, the heron has a gold ring in its beak).
    Both this and the CBG picture have a large (gold) band or stripe. Would this band have been reduced to a line in a seal like the one I showed in the B+W illustration above?
